Many Zimbabweans woke up with hope when the Zimbabwe Heads of Christian Denominations spoke with a clear voice against the plan to change the Constitution so that President Emmerson Mnangagwa can stay in power after 2028. As a political activist, I welcome this message because it shows that even the Church can see the danger that ZANU PF is trying to bring to our country. The Church said very clearly that this plan to extend the presidential term is wrong and goes against the Constitution. They asked the President to reject this idea and respect the law of the nation.

The Church said it is not right for MPs and some political activists to ask the President to stay longer. They said doing this would make the President look like he is helping to break the law. The Constitution is very clear on how long a President can stay in power. It is not something that can be changed to please one man. The Church reminded everyone that the President took an oath to protect the Constitution and must not allow anyone to push him into breaking it.

The ZHOCD also reminded us that President Mnangagwa himself has said he would follow the Constitution. He has promised that he will not seek to extend his term. The Church says this promise is important because it helps build trust in our democracy. When a leader keeps his word, the people feel safer and the country becomes more stable. The Church believes that the President must honour this promise and show respect for the sacrifices made during the liberation struggle.

The Church also said it has a duty to support democracy and the rule of law. They want Zimbabwe to have free and fair elections in 2028. They want a peaceful transfer of power if the people choose a new leader. They believe this is how the country can grow and solve its many problems. They warn that if the term limit is changed, people will lose trust in elections. They say this could bring chaos when what we really need is peace and unity.

The ZHOCD is calling on the President to stand strong and stay with the Constitution. They say he must allow elections to happen in 2028 and help make sure that power can move smoothly from one leader to another. They also ask all Zimbabweans to support the Constitution and think about the country before thinking about political parties.

The Church also wants the government to make sure elections are free and fair. They are asking for reforms to improve how elections are run. They want elections to be transparent so that people can trust the results. They say political parties must also respect the law and the Constitution.

The Church spoke about the important role of Members of Parliament. They said MPs must protect the Constitution and make sure no one tries to change it for personal gain. They want MPs to stop any plans that aim to extend the presidential term limit. They say this is the only way to protect democracy.

They ended their message with a verse from Micah 6:8 which talks about justice, mercy and walking humbly. The Church wants Zimbabwe to follow these values because they believe these values will help build a better future. They want the country to focus on peace and unity instead of looking for ways to stay in power forever.

The message from the Church is simple. Zimbabwe must follow the law and respect democracy. Extending the presidential term is not the answer. It is time for all Zimbabweans to come together and protect the Constitution so that elections can happen in 2028 and the country can move forward again.
