ZIMBABWE IS NOW TRAPPED IN A NEW POWER WAR
Zimbabwe is in trouble again. The ruling party Zanu PF is now fighting itself. President Emmerson Mnangagwa and his Vice President Constantino Chiwenga are fighting for power. This fight is making the whole country unstable. One man, Blessed Geza, who is a war veteran and was once in the Zanu PF central committee, is making things even worse for Mnangagwa. Geza wants Mnangagwa to leave office right now.
Geza is angry because Mnangagwa wants to stay in power longer than the law allows. His second term ends in 2028, but he wants to extend it to 2030. Geza says this is wrong. He calls it a dictatorship. Many people believe Mnangagwa wants a third term even when he denies it. But his supporters keep pushing the idea, and it shows they are doing it for him.
Geza is not alone. Many war veterans support him. Geza even said Mnangagwa must resign in ten days or face consequences. Later he denied the threat, but he is still fighting Mnangagwa. He says he will fight until he removes Mnangagwa from power. He has now promised a final push, just like the late opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai once did against Mugabe. Mnangagwa and Chiwenga removed Mugabe in 2017, but now they are fighting each other.
Zanu PF has expelled Geza because of this. But many war veterans still support him. They say Mnangagwa was not a real fighter in the liberation struggle. They say he trained but lived in Zambia during the war. They believe he has betrayed them and the whole country.
Even after threats from Mnangagwa’s people, Geza is not scared. He says he is fighting for all Zimbabweans, not just for one group inside Zanu PF. But many Zimbabweans have little hope. They have seen these power fights before. They remember how Mnangagwa promised change after removing Mugabe but failed to deliver. Now people fear that even if Chiwenga takes over, nothing will change.
Mnangagwa has been in politics for many years. He was a key person under Mugabe and helped enforce Mugabe’s harsh rule. He is also linked to the Gukurahundi killings in the 1980s, where thousands of people in the Midlands and southwest were killed. Even after he removed Mugabe, Mnangagwa continued with the same brutal rule. His government still arrests opposition leaders, limits freedoms, and allows corruption to grow.
Geza and the war veterans say Mnangagwa’s government is full of bad leadership, nepotism, and theft of public money. Other countries also see these problems. In 2020, the United States put sanctions on Mnangagwa and his close people because of corruption and human rights abuses. Britain also added its own punishments against his government.
Right now, Mnangagwa is in real danger. He has two big problems. First, the people of Zimbabwe are tired of him. If the army stops supporting him, he will lose control. Second, people inside his own party are now fighting him. The same people who helped him take power in 2017 are now turning against him. If they win, he could be removed in another coup.
The future of Zimbabwe now depends on how Mnangagwa deals with this crisis. The army, the war veterans, and the people will decide what happens next. If things get worse, Zimbabwe may face more violence. The country is already suffering with the economy, and this power fight makes life even harder. Many people just want a better life, but the leaders keep fighting for power instead of fixing the real problems. The coming months will be very important, and anything can happen.
